Materials form the fundament for human society. A new generation of materials may create a new generation of equipment, at the same time, lead to a new generation of industry development. Novel frontier materials can be an important driver for the strategic emerging industries. Shanghai University Leagues Forum for International Young Scholars Materials Frontier @ SHU, promoted by the construction of Science and Innovation Center in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta, will provide exchange opportunities on the cutting-edge achievements and development trends in materials fields, gather international outstanding scientists and engineers, build a world-class academic interaction platform to motivate idea collision and research cooperation.
The forum will invite renowned international young scholars to Shanghai University on October 13th, 2024, to exchange the latest research trends, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, introduce outstanding young talents and facilitate development of materials science and technology.
I. Profile of SHU
Being a municipal university included in national “Project 211”, SHU is jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. SHU is among the first batch of pilot projects of high-level university construction in Shanghai, and is one of the universities that focus on building their preponderant disciplines into first-rate ones on the list of the Ministry of Education.
SHU presently has 24 centers for post-doctoral studies, 26 first-class disciplines doctor’s degree conferring programs, 9 doctor stations for inter-disciplines, 41 first-class disciplines master’s degree conferring programs, 1 second-class disciplines master’s conferring programs (not covering first-class disciplines), 27 master degree categories and 101 undergraduate majors; it boasts a complete range of disciplines, covering Philosophy, Economics, Law, Literature, History, Engineering, Management, and Arts; it has 4 national key disciplines, 4 Type III peak disciplines at the municipal level, leads construction of 1 Type IV peak discipline in Shanghai, 10 Type I plateau disciplines at the municipal level and 6 Type II plateau disciplines at the municipal level, with 10 disciplines among the top 1% of ESI rankings.
Upholding the motto of “making unremitting efforts; being concerned about the country and the people before anything else” and the spirit of “pursuing the truth and innovation”, SHU will strive to build itself into a world-class comprehensive research-oriented university with distinctive characteristics.
II. Profile of MGI
The Materials Genome Institute (MGI) of Shanghai University was founded in 2014. MGI has 62 faculty members, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) ,1 chief scientist of national 973 Projects, and more than a dozen of talent plan winners such as distinguished young scholars of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). In recent years, adhering to the development concept of Academician Zhang Tongyi's "Developing a powerful country through science and technology, chasing the grand vision of materials genome", and with the mind of “prefect fusion of various disciplines, integration of computation and big-data, combination of research and application”, MGI has established new materials research and development methods and technologies based on high-throughput experimental technology, materials informatics, materials data science, machine learning, and intelligent computing materials. Meanwhile, MGI has also achieved substantially in scientific research, team building, platform architecture and personnel training. Focused on advanced alloy materials, quantum materials, new energy battery materials, catalytic materials, and other material systems, a new material genome engineering innovation research and development base has been formed in the aspects of material genome database construction, material preparation process optimization and screening, computational material method and software development, high-throughput preparation and characterization technology, service failure and evaluation.
